The greatest MMA fight card in the history of the sport is set to go down this Saturday night live from Madison Square Garden in New York, New York where three UFC belts will be up for grabs.
The UFC 205 main event will feature two current champions in Conor McGregor and Eddie Alvarez fighting for the Lightweight title, while the co-main event will feature Stephen Thompson challenging for Tyron Woodley's UFC Welterweight belt.
McGregor will be looking to become the first UFC fighter to ever hold belts in multiple weight classes simultaneously, a feat he achieved early in his career in the Cage Warriors promotion. MMA betting odds are close at Bovada, giving McGregor a small edge as the UFC odds -165 favorite. The Alvarez upset will pay +135.
Alvarez has been handicapped as the underdog in his last three fights, and he has recorded an upset win in all three. Despite that trend we think the footwork, left hand and creativity of McGregor will be too much for the aging Alvarez to handle. We expect him to use distance and accurate striking to wear down Alvarez for the victory. Look for a McGregor KO finish in the middle rounds.
In the UFC 205 co-main event Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson will bring his elite striking skills to MSG where many feel he will become the new UFC Welterweight champion. The Bovada sportsbook has him handicapped as the -205 favorite while action on Woodley is offering a +165 UFC odds payday. The line on Thompson got as low as -165 at one point last week, but seems to have leveled out above the -200 mark now.
We’re all over the -205 UFC odds option on Thompson in this one. He has arguably the best striking skills in MMA today, and as long as he can keep the fight standing he will eventually KO Woodley to become the new champ.
Woodley's only shot is to use his wrestling skills to get the fight to the mat, but that has become a difficult task to achieve since Thompson began training with the Serra-Longo fight team.
